One area of Internet marketing that has been receiving a lot of attention is pay per click advertising. Over the years it has become an increasingly popular form of online advertising. But with the good, also comes the bad. Pay per click advertising has lost some of its charm due to the threat of fraud that surrounds it. There are many ways and reasons by which pay per click fraud can be committed. The concept behind pay per click is that the advertiser pays the advertising firm for each click that they get on their link. The idea is to pay only when a potential client clicks on your link. However, it has been discovered over the past years that sometimes dishonest advertising firms clicks on the advertiser’s link in order to generate money for themselves. This means that the advertiser’s link is being clicked, but not by a genuine customer. Regardless of the genuineness of it, however, the advertiser has to pay for the click. At other times, spiteful competitors might click on an advertiser’s link merely to run up their pay per click bill. Many agencies now utilize a number of softwares by which they can track and analyze the genuineness of the clicks that are made on advertiser’s links. Sometimes the anti-fraud technologies and strategies that one employs is not enough to tackle PPC fraud because just as a solution to one kind of PPC fraud is found and implemented, another type of PPC fraud seems to have appeared out of nowhere. As an advertiser spending valuable marketing budget on PPC advertising, it is important that you be aware of the possibility of frauds. A big part of being aware of PPC fraud is to keep constant check on the clicks on your links. Monitoring the results of clicks on a daily basis is an excellent way of detecting if something is amiss. If you want to play really safe, it might be a good idea to use a software or other tools that help your detect PPC fraud. At the end of the day, it all boils down to money. It does not make sense to spend a chunk of your advertising budget on something that might or might not be getting you results. As the person spending the money, a word of caution is to be in control of how much you are spending. Putting a cap on the number of clicks in a day is a good way of ensuring that you do not end up spending much more than you actually should be. Limiting the number of clicks and putting into place filters like country filters are other ways of curbing illegitimate clicks. As a proactive advertiser, it would be best to keep abreast with the threats that PPC advertising faces. PPC advertising, after all, is a very effective marketing strategy for online businesses; the catch is to steer clear of the various loopholes that PPC fraud provides. The battle between fraud and anti-fraud rages on with some victories and some losses. |
